The concrete industry is working to develop products that are more environmentally friendly in response to consumer demands. Products like Grancrete and Hycrete are becoming more readily available. They claim to be environmentally friendly and either reduce or eliminate the need for additional waterproofing. However, these have not been extensively used in earth shelter construction yet. The threat of water seepage occurs around areas where the waterproofing layers have been penetrated.

Admittance of Light

Many of these homes naturally only admit light from one cardinal direction (generally south). This makes any rooms that are not directly on the southern wall dark, and even the rooms on the south side will have strong and harsh shadows as everything is lit from only a single direction. To remedy this, you will need to either use skylights or cut through the berm on the other sides of the house so that you can place windows there.

Three Cool Earth-Bermed Homes in the Hudson Valley

The boundary of the architecture and the landscape are blurred making the home seem like an extension of the terraced vineyard. Except for a few distinct lines, the concrete structure covered with planted roofs will be near imperceptible. Besides providing a shell for the interior, it had to withstand the combined weight of reinforced concrete, mounds of soil and the inches of snow that fall in the area each winter. With oversight from a structural engineer, Costigan was able to get the arch and two footings to withstand loads of up to 250 pounds per square foot. All the work he put into it made it his own; necessities like an additional bridge to get over the nearby stream set it apart from the dwellings he saw in the 2001 film The Fellowship of the Ring. You also need to be careful where to place insulation as improper placement can cause condensation to form on the interior walls.

Stability of Underground Temperatures

Fine grain soils retain moisture the best and are most susceptible to heaving. The second type of earth-sheltered home is one that is completely covered on three sides and on top with a thick layer of soil. These are the hardcore earth sheltered homes that take the tenets of this design style to their extremes. One or more layers of insulation board or foam are added on the outside of the waterproofing. If the insulation chosen is porous, a top layer of waterproofing is added.

Steel can be used but needs to be encased by concrete to keep it from direct contact with the soil which corrodes the metal. The soil needs to provide adequate bearing capacity and drainage, and help to retain heat. With respects to drainage, the most suitable type of soil for earth sheltering is a mixture of sand and gravel. Well graded gravels have a large bearing capacity (about 8,000 pounds per square foot), excellent drainage and a low frost heave potential. Clay soils, while least susceptible to erosion, often do not allow for proper drainage, and have a higher potential for frost heaves. Being aware of the moisture content of the soil and the fluctuation of that content throughout the year will help prevent potential heating problems.

The drawback to this material is that it is very heavy, difficult for the owner/builder to install, and subject to termite damage. Professional soil tests can determine the load-bearing capability of soils at your site.

Homes of this sort can utilize a conventional-style shingle or metal roof. And, no, even though a living roof has a thin layer of dirt, the roof is a separate unit from the earth berm surrounding the home, and so I would still not classify it as an underground home. An expert explains how these affordable alternative, energy-efficient homes are built. Using a fan or convection, passive cooling moves air from a relatively constant temperature into underground cooling tunnels before entering the interior of the building.

Earth sheltered dwelling express itself with the color harmony of soil and earth.[23] Meanwhile, the material properties of soil and earth give earth homes the simplicity of geomatic masses. Also, earth homes blend in perfectly with the landscape and highlight the beauty of the surroundings, which is a significant basis of the arcology concept. For example, yaodong and pit cave dwellings in Northern China hide themselves underground and blend in perfectly within the Loess plateau environment. Salt Cathedral in a halite mountain near the city of Zipaquirá, Colombia hugs the contour and highlights the natural features.

Types of Earth-Sheltered Home

The construction materials for each earth-sheltered structure will vary depending on characteristics of the site and the type of design. Materials must, however, provide a good surface for waterproofing and insulation to withstand the pressure and moisture of the surrounding ground. Studies show that earth-sheltered houses are more cost-effective in climates that have significant temperature extremes and low humidity, such as the Rocky Mountains and northern Great Plains.

The exact portion varies greatly from one design to another as you will see shortly. However, in every case, many tons of earth will be piled around and/or on the home. Since the earth bermed home is by far the more practical, affordable and popular choice, we will focus here today. Discounts are only applied to plans, not to Cost-to-Build Reports, plan options and optional foundations and some of our designers don't allow us to discount their plans.

Our long-standing success is based on our system’s ability to evolve and adapt to meet current building standards as well as consumer demands. Jaeger lives with his wife, Wren, on over 10 acres in the hills of the Ozarks. On this land, they have created a permaculture-based homestead where there was once just land ravaged by the logging industry. Utilizing his background in home renovation and his interest in natural building, he has built an off-grid home and various structures using many different alternative building strategies. Objects with a lot of thermal mass not only absorb large amounts of thermal energy, they also release all of that energy slowly over time. With a large enough thermal mass and a strong enough heat source, you can heat the mass for only a few hours and it will release that warmth over the next couple days and keep the space comfortable.

Many conventional homes stand out like a sore thumb, and not a pretty sore thumb. These homes are also bland in the sense that the exact same home can be plopped down pretty much anywhere in the world without thought to the surrounding landscape. However, these earth-sheltered homes meld with the earth itself – oftentimes disappearing from view completely from several different vantage points.

To avoid this difficulty, vents can be placed on other sides of the building (besides the roof), or separate segments of pipes can be installed. A narrower pipe in the roof that fits snugly into a larger segment of the building can also be used. The threat of water seepage, condensation, and poor indoor air quality can all be overcome with proper waterproofing and ventilation.

Due to its strength, durability, and fire resistance, concrete is the material of choice most frequently for building structures sheltered by the earth. For walls subjected to lateral or vertical pressure from soil cover, brick or stone masonry reinforced with steel bars can be used. In earth-sheltered structures, wood can be used extensively for internal and structural construction, including flooring, roofs, and exterior walls. A building with earth (soil) against the walls, on the roof, or completely buried underground is called a bermed Earth-shelter home. Earth’s role as thermal mass makes it simpler to keep a constant indoor air temperature, which lowers the expense of heating or cooling systems.

Bermed Earth Sheltered Homes

According to the US Department of Energy, underground structures can be prone to flooding if snowfall is not considered in the design. Soil stability should also be considered, especially when evaluating a sloping site. These slopes may be inherently stable when left alone, but cutting into them can greatly compromise their structural stability. Retaining walls and backfills may have to be constructed to hold up the slope prior to shelter construction. Other notable proponents of earth sheltering active in this era include Mike Oehler, Rob Roy, John Hait, Malcolm Wells, Peter Vetsch, Ken Kern and others. Now when most people think of an earth shelter, they picture a Hobbit House… but they can look like anything you want them to; It all depends on the design.

Earth-Sheltered Home: An Eco-Friendly, Passive Housing Alternative

Another historical example of in-hill earth shelters would be Mesa Verde, in southwest USA. These building are constructed directly onto the ledges and caves on the face of the cliffs. The front wall is built up with local stone and earth to enclose the structure. The floor plan is arranged, so that common areas and bedrooms share this light and heat from the southern exposure.

This type of layout can also be transposed to a double level house design with both levels completely underground. This plan has the highest energy efficiency of earth sheltered homes because of the compact configuration as well as the structure being submerged deeper in the earth. This provides it with a greater ratio of earth cover to an exposed wall than a one-story shelter would. The type of structure, depth below grade, and soil type should all be considered when choosing construction materials for a bermed earth-sheltered home.

Earth-sheltered homes are popular among eco-friendly homeowners, but they should be popular among everyone. They are storm-proof, earthquake and fire-resistant, plus extremely energy-efficient, soundproof, less susceptible than typical houses to extreme temperatures, and require less maintenance. Natural drainage away from the building is the best way to avoid water pressure against underground walls, but installed drainage systems can be used to draw water away from the structure.

“Anyone can build one of these, it’s just like building a walkout basement,” Dennie says. Finally, in some areas, like North Carolina, radon is a safety issue requiring testing. For we modern Southern folks, going one summer without the comforts of air conditioning is unthinkable.

Energy saving and practical, earth bermed homes are a great choice.

Folks on the street may call them “hobbit houses” in reference to J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, but earth-sheltered homes have been around for far longer than 1937 when the novel was published. Alternative housing is expected to continue increasing in popularity as the green building trend surges and energy prices go up, which means you may find an enthusiastic buyer willing to pay top dollar. But, since there are no guarantees in real estate, it is something to keep in mind. So be sure to talk to your contractor about installing the proper EVR valves, fresh air and/or heat exchangers. To insulate an earth-sheltered home, Dennie generally recommends putting an r-50 or r-58 insulation in the ceiling and r-20 in the walls and flooring. Here you will find a listing of all of the plans that employ earth-berms.

Concrete is the most common choice for constructing earth-sheltered buildings, because it strong, durable, and fire resistant. Concrete masonry units (also called concrete blocks) reinforced with steel bars placed in the core of the masonry can also be used, and generally cost less than cast-in-place concrete. A bermed house may be built above grade or partially below grade, with earth covering one or more walls.

While a wooden framed roof of adequate size can support a lighter living roof, only concrete will be strong enough to support a thick layer of earth. Oftentimes, three of the four sides of the home are covered by earth. In the colder climes of the northern hemisphere, the south-facing side of the house is not bermed and a large amount of glazing (windows) is used to permit the entrance of light and heat from the sun in the southern sky. In hot climates, this orientation can be reversed so that the south side is bermed and the cooler north side is left as the exposed side of the home. Despite their partially underground location, earth bermed homes can be designed to bring in as much light and fresh air as traditional houses. The idea behind passive annual heat storage is to use direct gain passive solar heating and a thermal battery effect that lasts several months to maintain a consistent temperature within an earth shelter all year round.

These methods rely on the U factor or thermal heat storage capacity of the earth itself below the frost layer. These designs are the exception however and risk frost heave damage in colder climates. The theory behind no insulation designs relies on using the thermal mass of the earth to store heat, rather than relying on a heavy masonry or cement inner structures that exist in a typical passive solar house. This is the exception to the rule and cold temperatures may extend down into the earth above the frost line making insulation necessary for higher efficiencies. Home Plan # D-0206Berm homes were originally designed as a solution to the energy crisis in the 1970’s. This type of house plan is one of the most energy efficient homes you can build.

So now that we have gone through the technical details of building an earth-sheltered home, let’s look at some examples of these homes that people have built around the world. The walls that have earth piled up against them will also have to be specifically designed to handle the forces of the dirt on the wall. An average stick-framed wall won’t hold up to the pressures exerted. These walls will need to be designed like a retaining wall because that is exactly what they are. Some of these walls will include buttresses, and others may be circular as a circle is much stronger than a long straight wall. An earth-sheltered home is one that uses a large quantity of earth (dirt, soil, subsoil, etc.) as a protective barrier on a good portion of the exterior of the house.

Unlike the conventional building, earth shelters require the insulation on the exterior of the building rather than inside the wall. One reason for this is that it provides protection for the waterproof membrane against freeze damage, another is that the earth shelter is able to better retain its desired temperature. There are two types of insulation used in earth shelter construction. Two to three inches glued to the outside of the waterproofing is generally sufficient. The second type of insulation is a spray on foam (e.g. polyurethane solid foam insulation).

10 contemporary living rooms with calm interiors

Exposed brick, wooden beams, layered up rugs, and swishy throw cushions – this modern rustic living room idea is so cozy and inviting and yet still really contemporary in feeling. Now, we know that minimalist living looks gorgeous in pictures, but in reality, how do you create a living room that looks like this? Make sure you also pick out closed storage pieces like sideboards and TV cabinets so you can hide away all that un-aesthetically pleasing stuff you don't want ruining your minimalist vibe. Since modern living room ideas are all about simplicity, it’s hard to go wrong with an all white living room idea.

Add a Quiet Gallery Wall

An Élitis wallcovering ties together the colors in the furniture, says Boschetti. In a room where neutral fabrics and colors call attention to modern shapes and materials, an oversized piece of wall art—made with bold hues and lighted accents—defines the overall aesthetic. In contrast to the ornate detailing and fussy design of older aesthetics, modern design is known for its emphasis on sleek silhouettes, functional layouts, and natural materials. Wood and leather accents, organic shapes, and earthy hues make this style a relaxed, practical, and pretty option for many homeowners.

Modern design rules dictate that it’s not the amount of stuff you can cram into a living room, but the quality of the pieces that make an impact. Leather sofas can often get a bad rap as being a bit outdated when compared to upholstered seats. But if you embrace the vintage and classic feel of this furniture – it can never go out of fashion. Pour your heart into your modern lounge, and learn how to decorate with blush pink to make your modern scheme blink with rose-tinted allure and calm. If you're feeling crafty, these DIY fireplace ideas will transform your fireplace into a fun and stylish centerpiece at very little cost. Think about how different fireplace ideas could resurrect a tired space – whether the fire is functional or not.

Modernism emerged as an architectural movement in the 1930s and has influenced the pared-back appearance of many interior design projects ever since. So take a cue from Kimberly + Cameron Interiors and make it feel like an escape—even when the television isn't on—by finishing it with patterned wall coverings, plants, and warm-toned furniture. We get that's the minimalist vibe, but what if you have a family of five, that all need a space on the sofa, plus a place to park their drinks, books, and technology?

Stick to Black and White

Create a very chic, cocooning space by painting all four walls with very dark charcoal, or adopt a black living room scheme if you are after something softer. But, you can cram plenty of pieces of furniture into your living room and still have the modern minimalist feel. Is it really a modern living room if you don't have some kind of statement light going on?

Loved by homeowners and interior designers alike, the laid-back, coastal style synonymous with California is a wonderfully versatile interior design trend. New takes on the idea that less is more may seem to catch on every few years, but in the design world minimalism is a lasting aesthetic, not a trend. Minimalist living rooms in particular are appealing because the spaces have so much potential for messiness.

Max-out your open plan lounge with double-duty furniture like coffee table ottomans that save space whilst providing functional extras for storage and tasks. Opt for a spacious sectional topped with throw pillows, a large coffee table and simple, framed artwork on a crisp, white wall. With deep green walls and a surge of gold accents, this living room — designed by Jenn Feldman — feels cozy, warm and inviting. The balanced furniture placement in this high-ceilinged space gives each piece a purpose, from the curved coffee table to the storage-friendly sideboard.

A minimalist living room should include essentials like comfortable seating, good lighting, and window treatments for privacy and temperature control. The studio used warm, deep colours to create a sense of calm, including dark wood detailing and aubergine hues. Marble surfaces add a luxury touch and look intriguing next to the simple brick floor.

As shown, if you want a grounding feel, opt for beige living room ideas. They come with great color choices like stone, taupe, tan, ecru, and fawn. These versatile, earthy shades will create a harmonious and relaxing space. Busy bee lives ever more make us cherish our homes as sanctuaries of calm to rest and restore.

A rougher, textural shiplap paneling can help create a more rustic feel, and contrasts with the eggshell finish of painted kitchen units. Shiplap can be painted in any color, but it is important to dilute the paint so that the texture of the timber shows through. Paneling is also very effective on ceilings,’ says Simon Temprell, interior design manager at Neptune.

Alison Victoria salvaged the antique mantel from Architectural Accents and made it the star of this minimalist living room by topping it with an oversize mirror. You see this vignette when you enter the home, so it sets the tone for the room rather than overwhelming it. A nearby staircase has been painted black as a contrast, creating a moody atmosphere that's contrasted by the colourful cushions on the large sofa.

A minimalist living room that focuses on the essentials can help you to keep clutter at bay, come home to a calming space, and make whatever square footage you do have feel larger and airier. The living room of Riverside Apartment, set within a 1920s building on New York's Upper West Side, owes much of its quiet charm to the beautiful wooden floorboards. The theme was taken up in both furniture in various types of wood and a woodclad doorway. A baroque-style chair and a fabric-clad footstool help soften the space. Interior design studio YSG opened up the kitchen and living room into one large, open-plan space that connects to the garden to create a "fluid" sense of space in the Budge Over Dover House in Sydney.

A funky pendant or quirky floor lamp can instantly change the tone of space –making it feel more on-trend and modern. Bold colors work just as well in a contemporary living space, and you can add them with accessories (cheaply), furniture (a bit more of an outlay), or interior paint color trends (small outlay, bigger effort). Mixing clean-lined pieces with vintage finds, traditional designs, and on-trend touches can create a look that has a modern sensibility but still feels eclectic and curated.

So it's no surprise that this modern traditional living room with its overhead beams and fireplace insert works. With the off-white decor, it's a little Scandi and a touch farmhouse, but there's no doubt it has chic credentials. This exercise of mixing rustic with contemporary has long been 'in' for interior designers. If you’re ready to embrace pastels in your home, using on-trend bold colors is a great place to start. Try selecting one key color as a feature, and bringing in other surprising shades as accents. Adding colorful frames and accessorizing with home decor will create a whimsical and playful feeling.

And such modes of living modern life require a similarly multifaceted design scheme. Once you've perfected every other element – floor, room color scheme, lighting, and window treatments – your chosen accessories act as your final layer. 'Paneling is a useful way of introducing warmth and character to a room – there's something cozy about being surrounded by wood. For an instant hit of coastal Californian charm, wall paneling is a must. ‘Tongue and groove paneling is a mainstay of laidback Californian design and it sits very well with Shaker-style cabinetry, as shown in the above kitchen. The Lyceum Apartments in Stockholm are located in the Old Technical College's Pharmaceutical Institute and feature light-filled rooms with clean designs and historical details.

Perhaps most fitting, given its history, though, was the 2008 film The Duchess starring Keira Knightley. By this time, royal purses were also nearly exhausted by the constant expenses of war, and the decision was made to try to sell Somerset House. Somerset House is really an incredible sight to behold, but it’s even more spectacular when you know the history behind it.

About Somerset House

One of favourite galleries in London, there are more than 500 paintings and 26,000 other works, spanning from medieval times through to today. Running for two weeks, the event sees the courtyard brimming with movie lovers from everyday Londoners (and visitors) to even a few famous faces. Somerset House looks like pretty much any other Neoclassical Georgian building at first glance – albeit a rather impressive one (there’s a reason I chose it as one of the most handsome spots in London). The buildings are striking, but wait until you hear the stories behind them. Somerset House pursues a spirit of ‘Step Inside, Think Outside’ for everyone, regardless of age, stage or background. Its energy is unending - intensifying creativity, multiplying opportunity, driving artistic and social innovation, sometimes personal transformation, all at once.

After a campaign to open Somerset House to the public, they once again became a home for arts and culture in 2000. The great Georgian era structure was built to be a grand public building housing various government and public-benefit society offices. Its present tenants are a mixture of various organisations, generally centred around the arts and education.

The story of Somerset House reads much like an epic saga, filled with lords, princesses and dramatic battles. Ultimately, they wanted to create a foundation for the serious study of art – a project that was realised when the Institute opened its doors in 1932 – the first academic centre devoted to the history of art. The Courtauld dates back to 1933 and has been busy amassing an impressive collection of artworks ever since.

Offering a diverse and dynamic public programme of contemporary arts and culture, they are also a home to a large community of creative businesses, artists and makers, including Somerset House Studios. The platform for its work is a neoclassical building at the heart of London with a long history of influence, ideas and counter-perspective. It has always been open to the world, and this spirit of constant curiosity remains at its heart. Today, as host to the UK’s largest creative community working globally across art, technology, business and social enterprise, it continually draws in fresh ideas and new talent.

It’s pretty amazing to revel to the sounds of your current faves while in the shadow of one of London’s most historic buildings. Somerset House is one of my favourite places to visit in London – a beautiful palace on the outskirts of Covent Garden that has been turned into one of the city’s coolest cultural hubs. Admission to Somerset House is free, but you’ll need to buy a ticket for some exhibitions and events. As the home of cultural innovators, Somerset House connects creativity and the arts with wider society.

It brings worlds and minds together to intensify creativity and multiply opportunity, driving artistic and social innovation at once. If you’re looking for where Somerset House is, it can be a little tricky as there are actually four entrances. However, each one will take you through to the exhibitions, cafe and restaurant. As it is such a well-known and loved icon of London, Somerset House has featured as a film location in many movies, from James Bond to Sherlock Holmes.

For a time, it was then used by the wife of Charles I, Henrietta Maria of France, who was a Roman Catholic and had a chapel created within the buildings. Unfortunately for Edward, just three years later he was the victim of a dramatic coup which culminated in his execution in the Tower of London in 1552. It’s not only in the summertime when Somerset House’s iconic courtyard is transformed into something spectacular. Each winter, the courtyard becomes a little slice of a winter wonderland, with its own skating rink. The concerts are held in the expansive courtyard area of Somerset House.

Construction began on the beautiful palace, which would be one of the most lavish in all of England. A sleek-yet-approachable bar on the roof of one of London’s most recognisable and impressive buildings? Beautiful as the pieces at the Courtauld are, its history also warrants a glance. The Institute that runs the Gallery (the Courtauld Institute of Art) and the Gallery itself were both founded by three men, Samuel Courtauld, Lord Lee of Fareham and Sir Robert Witt. While by day it’s all very family-friendly, there are also “lates” where DJs spin some great tracks and the vibe becomes significantly more festive.

The lowest-priced plan is a bit limiting, but you have access to lots of free apps to extend your site’s functionality. Squarespace also includes tools for creating a members-only section and Tock, an addon for accepting reservations, which is vital for some restaurants. There’s also an option to find a professional designer to create a Squarespace website for you. I like that there’s an option for this, but I didn’t find it necessary because Squarespace is so easy to use. On top of the confusing pricing, IONOS also offers add-ons at strange introductory rates.

Bluehost’s WordPress focus means it’s more suited for users eager to join that ecosystem, rather than go with something more standalone. Given how proven and capable WordPress is on the web, that’s not a bad choice at all. Bluehost is also already a quality, traditional web hosting service, so these site-building tools just sweeten the deal for existing users. The best website builders streamline the site-creation process so that anyone can do it. Bluehost achieves this with its highly accessible, alternative interface to the already popular WordPress platform.

We take pride in our ability to create a unique design for each company. Strong visual images and motion graphics capture your customers attention and get them to do business with you, or at the very least, explore more of your website. Once we have established a beautiful visual design, we hand-off the designs to our programming team.

I think one of my favorite features is the AI image creator that’s built into Wix’s site editor. I described the type of image I wanted and it created precisely what I needed. I would argue that the image creator is better than the text generator. The only thing I don’t love (and this is probably because of the snap-to-grid style of Wix’s site editor) is that I can’t position anything where I want it, like slightly left of center.

Expert professionals and proven processes, all working together, strategically, deliver the very best in web design. Sadly, it was nowhere near as good as other AI-powered site builders, like Webnode. You’ll also need a domain name – this makes your website appear professional and helps repeat visitors recognize your website. Website builders often include a free custom domain name for the first year, but some, like Shopify, will require you to source and pay for a domain name separately.

somerset house

It brings worlds and minds together to intensify creativity and multiply opportunity, driving artistic and social innovation at once. If you’re looking for where Somerset House is, it can be a little tricky as there are actually four entrances. However, each one will take you through to the exhibitions, cafe and restaurant. As it is such a well-known and loved icon of London, Somerset House has featured as a film location in many movies, from James Bond to Sherlock Holmes.

Exhibitions & Events

After a campaign to open Somerset House to the public, they once again became a home for arts and culture in 2000. The great Georgian era structure was built to be a grand public building housing various government and public-benefit society offices. Its present tenants are a mixture of various organisations, generally centred around the arts and education.

How to Get to Somerset House

It’s pretty amazing to revel to the sounds of your current faves while in the shadow of one of London’s most historic buildings. Somerset House is one of my favourite places to visit in London – a beautiful palace on the outskirts of Covent Garden that has been turned into one of the city’s coolest cultural hubs. Admission to Somerset House is free, but you’ll need to buy a ticket for some exhibitions and events. As the home of cultural innovators, Somerset House connects creativity and the arts with wider society.

Never one to be put in a box, past exhibitions have ranged from a collection of Snoopy cartoons to shows as part of London Fashion Week and just about everything in between. From the interesting and challenging temporary art exhibitions hosted in its gallery space to the outdoor music gigs and film screenings, there’s always something new to explore.

The End of the Palace

The story of Somerset House reads much like an epic saga, filled with lords, princesses and dramatic battles. Ultimately, they wanted to create a foundation for the serious study of art – a project that was realised when the Institute opened its doors in 1932 – the first academic centre devoted to the history of art. The Courtauld dates back to 1933 and has been busy amassing an impressive collection of artworks ever since.

Filming and Photography

In its place, William Chamberlain designed a new building, which would be open, at least in part, to the public to enjoy (lest they get any more ideas about overthrowing the monarchy). After a recent renovation, the prestigious art gallery has reopened and features brand new exhibition spaces for their impressive collection. Another of the most famous summer Somerset House events is Summer Screen, which sees the beautiful courtyard become London’s premier outdoor cinema. Somerset House plays host to a revolving door of artistic exhibitions. These include visual art across mediums including sculpture, painting, photography as well as live performances.

Since then, numerous extensions have been added onto Somerset House and it remains a residence with a very eclectic selection of tenants. From small tech start-ups to the British Fashion Council and King’s College of London’s Law School, it really is a vast array. Catherine Braganza, wife of King Charles II, was the next – and last – royal resident, living at Somerset House until her death in 1693. While resident, theatre-loving Anne commissioned some of the best architects in Europe to add onto Somerset House, then renamed “Denmark House” in her honour. Unfortunately, she never saw it completed as she died before it is finished. Over the next 150 years, the Palace became a home for at least two princesses – Princess Elizabeth who moved in at age 20, staying until she became Queen Elizabeth I, and Princess Anne of Denmark, wife of James I.

Take a look at the website to find out what’s on during your visit. Some of the events are free (as is admission to Somerset House), but you’ll have to cough up for others. By telling the story of the three Catholic queens who lived at Old Somerset House, the building takes on a new – and intriguing – life, in front of your very eyes.

It enables surprising alliances, convergences and chance encounters, which move people and disciplines outside of themselves. This constant sideways take is also felt in its public programming which brings subjects and methods together in experimental forms. It celebrates differences and apparent incompatibilities with surprising, often magical results. Somerset House’s most iconic experiences, staged in its courtyard, cannot be created elsewhere. They mix the unusual, the transgressive and the joyful in the most original and memorable ways. It’s refreshing to see such an important historical site showcasing such an eclectic range of contemporary arts.

1 3 Profile Investigator Martyr in Human Design Knowledge Base

1/3 profile human design

Be open to exploration, as your purpose might not be where you initially expect to find it. The third defining feature of the 1/3 Projector is the deep sense of purpose. You are drawn to explore profound questions of existence and purpose, seeking a deeper understanding of life’s complexities. Lastly, use frustration as a tool for personal growth.

These individuals often apply their innate need to investigate in understanding their partners deeply. They crave certainty in relationships, and their strategy often includes thorough exploration of their compatibility with their partner. Know that as a 1/3, your energy radiates out when you’re doing the deep work on yourself, your inner journey is so very important.

False Self in the 1/3 Investigator Martyr Profile

Sometimes it takes 'going off on a tangent' to realise that you're off track. No need to judge yourself, just bring it back to what serves you most. There is A LOT of marketing narrative out there that says ‘find your niche in order to be successful’. Sure, that might work for someone else, but if it’s not working for you and more to the point doesn’t feel good, then don’t do it.

Some questions from the community about being a 1/3 Projector:

Guiding people through life experiences as no doubt you will have tasted a little bit of everything. As a 1st line, you are a knowledgeable person, so it is important to wait to be invited to share the knowledge you have gained. I’m sure you’ve experienced times where you’ve shared something you’ve been researching because you’re so excited about it but the timing has been off (due to not being invited in!) and you feel ignored.

About the 3/5 (Martyr/Heretic) Profile in Human Design – The Great Life Experimenter

As a Projector, you may crave even more alone time due to this and that's also okay. You really do radiate outwards and draw people in when you do the deep work on yourself. Society likes to tell us to 'put others first' whereas you naturally SHOW others the importance of self introspection just by doing it. Honour your need for rest here too and bring in a grounding practice.

The 1/3 Profile and Personal Relationships

Remember, your curiosity is a gift, and those who value it are worth keeping close. Your investigative nature is a key aspect of your 1/3 Projector profile. The 3rd line of the profile is driven to learn through experience or experimentation.

Understanding the 1/3 Investigator Martyr Profile

1/3 profile human design

Reflectors with the 1/3 Profile, while rare, can provide a mirror to society. A Projector with a 1/3 Profile may offer guidance and insights based on their deep understanding and first-hand experiences. They’re naturally skilled at seeing what works and what doesn’t, making them excellent advisors once they’ve been invited to share their wisdom. Fiercely independent, Crafters seek out new experiences which can provide them with first-hand understanding, knowledge, and learning opportunities.

The depth and knowledge you can attain as a 1/3 Generator is truly remarkable. Your investigative nature means you may uncover new information that could necessitate a change in course. Making decisions that align with your 1/3 Generator nature is key to living a fulfilling life. Dealing with frustration is part of your growth journey. It’s okay to take your time to process your feelings and decide on the best course of action.

We live in a world where it’s normal to work 40 hours a week and to only get two weeks of vacation on average every year. On top of that, we’re told, “just do it.” Working for extended periods of time is suitable for Generators and initiating is what Manifestors are here to do. So as you can see, Projectors are conditioned to believe that they have the energy and initiative mechanisms to work like everyone else. People of the First Personality Line tend to subtly feel a state of psychological discomfort, which is often called an inferiority complex. In fact, this is just a constant striving to get to the bottom and complete your search in order to go out into the world and give people complete knowledge - a deep, reliable foundation. Second, remember that waiting for the invitation is not about passivity.

In addition to providing security, Investigators also feel confident in sharing information they’ve personally sourced and verified. Investigators feel confident in sharing information they’ve personally sourced and verified. The Investigator Martyr’s desire for a strong foundation of knowledge is rooted in a need for security.

Remember, as a 1/3 Generator, you need time to gather information, to make decisions, and to recover from your trials and errors. Listen to the energetic yes or no signals your body sends when faced with decisions. As a 1/3 Generator, you thrive in secure and reliable relationships. Be cautious about who you let into your inner circle, and invest your energy into nurturing these relationships.
